  This module covers advanced data modelling and database development methodology, the techniques exploited by relational database technologies relating in particular to query processing and transaction management, and post relational database technologies including object oriented and web databases.

  Computer applications which make use of large quantities of shared data give rise to problems which are qualitatively different from those encountered when only small amounts of data are manipulated or only a single user interacts with the data. The problems are of both a technological nature, i.e. how do you manipulate large quantities of data efficiently, and an intellectual nature, i.e. how do you organise large quantities of data in a way which is comprehensible and useful for different applications? The main aim of this module is to tackle the latter question of data organisation and a secondary aim is to examine the technology which realises efficiency of data manipulation.
